White to re-apply for Springbok coaching job

2007 Rugby World Cup winning coach Jake White will re-apply for his old job after next year's tournament in New Zealand.

The Springboks appear to be in decline after suffering losses last year to France and Ireland and then New Zealand (twice) and Australia this year under current coach Peter de Villiers.

De Villiers has a contract until after the Rugby world cup but he is believed to be under pressure after the bad results and comments that he frequently makes in the media.

Last week he was forced to backtrack after he accused referees of favouring the All Blacks because New Zealand were hosting next year's World Cup.

He has always received backing from the South African Rugby Union but now that the team has started going backwards management is not as happy with him as they once were.

Former coach Jake White says that he wants to reunite the management team in the 2007 World Cup which includes former Australia coach Eddie Jones, forwards coach Gert Smal and attack coach Allister Coetzee, who is in charge of the Stormers.

"Eddie and I both really want to win the World Cup again," White told the Guardian.

"I cannot help wondering where the Springboks would be today if I had had the same chance as Graham Henry (the New Zealand coach) to stay on.

"The team that best gets its defence right will win the World Cup next year. New Zealand's is better while ours has gone backwards. We won't make it if we do not come up with new ideas.

"My plan is to apply for the Boks job again next year. I'm already making sure that I have a good idea of the young talent in South Africa's system. "

"I'm feeling refreshed and have decided that I want to coach the national team again. I assume they will be going through the same tender procedure as last time to appoint the next coach.

"I never decided to go ply my trade overseas, but if South Africa don't want me again next year, I will consider an overseas appointment."

SARU president Oregan Hoskins, says that De Villiers was not facing the sack but added that the coach had again been told to mind his words.

"We are reviewing the opening of the Tri-Nations and we are concerned about the losses. We shouldn't change the personnel – in other words, we shouldn't sack the coach.

"I wouldn't say he (De Villiers) is the best coach in the world but I would not say he is inferior to Jake White. I'd say they are on a par.

"My issue with the coach is his media comments, which I think detract from his ability. That is where I would like to concentrate."
